Time Bookstores Exiting Singapore; Last Bookstore to Close on 22 September

Do you remember how books look like?

If you don’t, this news probably won’t affect you.

But if you’re a bookworm who prefers a physical book to accompany you on your journey to work or school, instead of brainrot TikTok contents, then this would be bad news to you.

Times Bookstores, a long-standing fixture in Singapore’s literary landscape, is set to close its final outlet in the country on 22 September 2024, marking the end of its nearly 40-year presence in Singapore.

The Instagram post stated that “After decades of creating magical memories and sharing countless stories, the time has come to close the final chapter of Times Bookstores.” They thanked customers for being part of their reading journey and for allowing them to “fill your lives with the wonder of books and the joy of imagination”.

Times Bookstores invited customers to visit their last remaining outlet at Jelita Shopping Centre on Holland Road one final time before its closure on Sunday, 22 September 2024. They encouraged patrons to “take home a piece of Times” with them, likely referring to the books and merchandise available in the store.

The announcement was met with emotional reactions from many longtime customers who expressed sadness about the closure and shared memories of their experiences with Times Bookstores over the years.

But this isn’t unexpected.

The Decline of Times Bookstores

The closure of Times Bookstores in Singapore has been a gradual process over the past few years. In 2019, the chain closed its 8,000 sq ft Centrepoint branch, which was once one of Singapore’s largest bookstores. In 2021, outlets at Marina Square and Paragon were shuttered.

In February 2024, branches at Plaza Singapura and Waterway Point were closed.

With the exit of Times Bookstores, it leaves few large bookstore chains remaining in Singapore, with Books Kinokuniya and Popular being the main survivors.

However, Books Kinokuniya only have two outlets in Singapore.
