In 2005, two years after SARS magically disappeared and a pandemic seemed unlikely to ever happen again, a man by the name of Kelvin Tan won the first edition of Project Superstar in 2005, as well as our hearts.
Kelvin was born blind due to a condition called Leber’s congenital amaurosis, which causes retinal dystrophy, and had been a busker before the competition.
Since then, Kelvin has released three albums, led a choir at the opening ceremony at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, and sang Singapore’s 2009 National Day Parade’s theme song.
More recently, Kelvin got hitched to his girlfriend Inez Hung, becoming the first local celebrity in 2022 to get married.
While he was coy about their relationship at first, Kelvin has now revealed more details about his significant other.

Speaking to Lianhe Wanbao, Kelvin said he met Inez through her sister during goalball training.
Kelvin, Inez, and her sister Joan, were all goalball players.
Kelvin and Inez, who has amblyopia, began dating in 2016, and quickly found that they were a good match as they are both easy-going people who make no attempt to hide their flaws.
Then, in 2020, the couple decided to take the relationship to the next level, and Kelvin proposed.
“It was very simple, I bought a bouquet of flowers and a ring and proposed at my home,” he said.
Kelvin joked that deliberately selected a date just a few days before his birthday, so his chances of getting rejected were lower.
“We celebrated the occasion and then I proposed.” And of course, she said yes.
A Muted But Teary Affair
As per the COVID-19 guidelines, the couple only invited 100 guests, mostly close friends and family, to their wedding reception at the Parkroyal.
“I don’t get emotional easily but I was nervous and a bit teary when I said my vows,” Kelvin said.
The newlyweds are currently living with their parents as they wait until the construction of their four-room BTO flat is finished, estimated to be in the latter part of 2023.
They also plan to go on a cruise next month instead of travelling abroad for their honeymoon.
A Career Change
Unbeknownst to some, Kelvin represented Singapore in Goalball at the 2015 ASEAN Para Games held in Singapore.
Goalball is a team sport that was introduced in 1946 specially for the visually impaired. Played in teams of three, the objective is to roll a ball tied with bells into the opposing team’s goal. His wife Inez is also currently a member of Singapore’s women’s goalball team.
But Kelvin will soon be embarking on a new career path—joining Lighthouse School to teach visually impaired students computer and mobile phone usage as well as conversational Mandarin.
