OpenAI’s ChatGPT has revolutionised the digital landscape, marking a significant shift in how we use technology.

Within a year of ChatGPT’s launch, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot has assisted people of different job scopes in their day-to-day lives – from brainstorming and generating content ideas to summarising vast chunks of text to translating paragraphs into a different language and more.?

ChatGPT stands at the forefront of AI innovation, reshaping our daily tasks.

However, ChatGPT now faces its rival, one that may surpass its capabilities.

On Wednesday (6 December 2023), Google launched Gemini, its most powerful AI model to date.?

This launch represents a significant milestone in Google’s journey through AI development.

Gemini, an expansive language model, is set to transform the AI realm. Gemini has the unique ability to process text, images, and videos simultaneously, positioning it as a game-changer.

Here’s an in-depth look at everything you need to know about Gemini, the latest competitor to ChatGPT.

What is Gemini, and what makes it stand out?

Google (GOOG, GOOGL) has introduced its groundbreaking Gemini generative AI model, positioning it as a competitor to other chatbots Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI’s GPT-4.?

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis proudly proclaims Gemini as Google’s “pinnacle in capability and versatility” to date.

What sets Gemini apart as Google’s most powerful model is its multimodal capabilities.?

In simpler terms, Google’s Gemini model generates and comprehends an unprecedented diversity of data types.

Among its many capabilities, Gemini can analyse text, audio, video, images, and even code, making it a versatile and potent tool.

While there are other multimodal offerings, Google said that Gemini stands out above the rest due to its unique design philosophy.?

Unlike other platforms, which piece together separate models to handle text, video, and images and then try to mesh them into a single entity, Gemini was meticulously crafted from the ground up with a holistic approach that considers all these mediums cohesively.

As Hassabis highlights, this distinction translates into Gemini’s superior ability to comprehend multimodal data, resulting in enhanced performance across various content types, from handwritten notes to images and videos.

Gemini Comes in 3 Different Sizes

The Gemini family of models offers three options: Ultra, Pro, and Nano, each tailored to specific needs.

Gemini Ultra takes the crown as the largest and most capable member, engineered to tackle highly intricate tasks.?

On the other hand, Gemini Pro shines when it comes to scalability across a broad spectrum of tasks, and it’s the chosen companion for Bard.?

Meanwhile, Gemini Nano stands out as the epitome of efficiency, perfect for on-device tasks where resource constraints may apply.

Google’s Gemini Surpasses OpenAI’s ChatGPT4 Model in Most Tests

Google asserts that its Gemini model is a trailblazer in the AI realm and that it can surpass human experts in specific tasks.?

In rigorous testing, Gemini outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-4 across multiple domains. It demonstrated exceptional abilities in solving mathematical reasoning problems, dissecting complex scientific data, and even mastering advanced coding tasks.?

As a part of this significant announcement, Google released a series of informative videos to showcase Gemini’s extraordinary capabilities.

According to the Financial Times, one such demonstration involved scanning a handwritten worksheet filled with mathematical formulas, where Gemini detected errors and provided clear explanations for them.

In a separate showcase, YouTuber Mark Rober harnessed the power of Bard, seamlessly integrated with Gemini, to orchestrate a captivating video experiment.?

In this video, he embarked on a mission to craft the ultimate aerodynamic paper plane. The AI not only suggested innovative experiments and design improvements but also offered ingenious methods for accuracy testing, such as launching the paper plane through a ring of fire.

Google’s Gemini AI Will Be Available in More Than 170 Countries

Gemini has been integrated into Bard, Google’s AI-powered chatbot in the English language. It is available in more than 170 countries and territories, as reported by The Verge.

This includes the United States, Asia and Africa, with plans to update it with more powerful software next year.?

However, as of now, Gemini will not be available in Europe or the UK, which Google suggested was due to regulatory hurdles.

A version of Gemini is currently available on the Pixel 8 OS, where it guides users through suggested messages.
